Fast Five – Paul Callaghan

In the run up to Freeplay, we’ll be doing Fast Five interviews with some of our speakers, our program advisory committee, and of course, our directors.  Eve has already been, so now it’s Paul’s turn!

What are you working on right now?
Freeplay for a start. Now that the program is out, I’m wrangling media, volunteers, and the projects we’ll have in our expo space. I’m also working as a writer on two very different game projects. And I’m Excited and nervous about being recently appointed to the GDAA committee.

What game do you wish you’d worked on, and why?
All the games I’ve loved, I’m glad I haven’t made them because I’ve enjoyed the experience of being surprised and engaged by them. But if I had to choose, I’d say Deus Ex. Once you get past it’s terrible first level, it’s an incredible experience – and getting the chance to work with one of Warren Spector, I think would more than offset my concerns :)

If you weren’t involved in games how would you be paying the rent?
I’m rather lucky in that I get to be a writer in the industry. If I wasn’t working in games, I’d probably still be doing that. Once Freeplay is over, I’ll be back on the novel & short story bandwagon.

What do you think will be the next big thing?
It’ll be whatever we decide to make it. There are so many opportunities In the creative side of games right now – from serious games to transmedia to micro-studios and beyond – and our aim is for Freeplay to bring them to light.

What’s getting you all giddy about games at the moment?
My new iPad. And Epic Mickey. And thinking about where we’ll be by Freeplay 2011.

Paul Callaghan is co-director of Freeplay, very opinionated, and is looking forward to having time to finish Dragon Age come August 16.
