Fast Five – Fee Plumley

Sewn Portrait by Laura Haigh

In our ongoing series of Fast Five interviews, here’s Fee Plumley who’ll be on our Government Secrets panel.

What are you working on right now?

Heaps of stuff! I just finished the Annual Report, so you’ll be able to see what we did last year soon.

I’m getting the online Geek network up & running so that geeks can all chat with each other, I can keep on top of how things are going and help out where needed. In time we’ll connect the hosts in a group so they can do the same thing (for now they’re just getting used to having a geek around the place). And then we’ll start sharing some of those experiences publicly so the sector more broadly can learn from observing.

We just got the OK on this year’s funding, so I’m building the next round of programs – watch this space!

Oh, and I guess I’m working out what I’ll say for you next month!

What are you playing right now – digital or otherwise?

Scott Pilgrim vs The World! Just got it for the iPhone yesterday. Loving the retro look & feel. I only just got my b0rked PS3 back from Sony and haven’t had time to get properly back in to it yet.

What is your favourite ever creative moment?

Wow, what a hard question! There have been so many… I guess the Roller Derby discovery was a goodie (and is relevant ‘cause it ended up in a Wii game design). I was living in SA at the time, working for ANAT (http://www.anat.org.au) . After 8 years running a company that led a lot of creative processes/workshops it was a big treat to be a participant in the Crossover Media Lab. During a user-centred-design exercise someone in my group said that our character was a RD fan. I said ‘what’s RD’ and am now an addict. The game (& broader socnet concept) did actually get some interest when we pitched it, and the gang still consider making it… one day perhaps.

Or maybe the most recent, where I was a peer advisor on a locative media residency in Banff, Canada. After 14 years being a media arts producer I finally gave myself permission to be an artist. That was quite a big moment.

What’s a non-gaming entertainment / artistic highlight of the past 12-months for you?

Um, roller derby… I usually hate sport but this one is just the best ever. Fesity chicks in hotpants racing around a track in roller skates, beating the bejesus out of each other. Awesome!

What has been the biggest change with what you do in the past 5 years?

That people have stopped thinking I’m insane, and in fact now do all the things I was talking about 14 years ago. The only problem is that I’m addicted to emerging/experimental; as soon as something becomes mainstream I tend to get a bit bored….

Fee is Digital Program Officer at the Australia Council for the Arts.  She runs a number of funding and advocacy initiatives exploring skills, new creations and distribution in digital culture that includes Geek in Residence, Digital Culture Fund, Artist Rights, Digital Archives, Transmedia, the ABC partnership, ePhilanthropy and the MPA Digital R&D program.  She doesn’t sleep much. Tweets quite a lot. And is definitely a techno evangelist and social media/networking floozy.
