Spots for Speakers

Our program is so close we can almost taste it. So many emails are flying around and our speaker database is filling up nicely.

But we still have some gaps that we’re hoping to fill. Without giving too much away (patience, the program launch is only a week and a bit away), we’d really like to hear from you if you think you might be a good fit Continue reading

Freeplay Awards 2011 are open for submissions

Today, we’re very excited to announce that the 2011 Freeplay awards are open for submissions.

Last year, we received over 50 entries from across Australia and the rest of the world – giving us a reason to split the best game into both local and international varieties – for categories including best technical innovation, best concept art, best design and best on paper design. You can check out all of last year’s winners on our web site here. Continue reading

The Emerging Writers’ Festival

We’re really excited about working with the Emerging Writers’ Festival this year. Their focus on the process and craft of writing over specific writers and books has been a huge influence on the way we think about programming Freeplay and we jumped at the opportunity to develop some playful storytelling projects with them. Associate Producers…

Running Freeplay is a big task, and this year we’ve been thinking about the best way to make the event bigger while still retaining both our sanity and also the general vibe. We have plans, but we need some help pulling it together so for the first time we’re looking on bringing in some associate producers.

The role of an associate producer will be to help us co-ordinate and direct some of our expanded events program, including what we’re hoping will be a bigger public program that will expand out from the 2 days at the State Library. Where our conference program is looking to focus on more on the dev side this year, the public program aims to look at music, art, play, and the intersection of the digital and the real-world. Expo projects…

Last year, over 1000 people came through our expo space in Experimedia. This year, we’re expecting that to be an even bigger number – and we have even more space available due to how we’re laying out the room.

We’re looking for the quirky, the experimental, the commercial, the finished and unfinished, the polished and the unpolished. All we really ask is that it’s playable and will be interesting to a wide audience that will include developers, educators, students, and the general public. Continue reading | 3 Comments

Speakers…

Over the next few days, we’ll be going into a little bit more detail about exactly what we’re looking for from our speakers, sessions, expo projects, and associate producer roles. First up, is our call for speakers & session ideas.

Last year we had 65 speakers over our 29 sessions. These were mostly panels, with as diverse a range of people covering topics from licensing issues to prototyping & polishing to play and culture.

This year we want to mix up the format a little bit and while we have some ideas for how to do that, we’re open to new ones.

Looking for speakers. And everything else.

The planning for Freeplay 2011 continues apace, and it’s about this time every year that we start looking for speakers, volunteers, expo projects. This year, we’re also looking for some associate producers and new board members to help manage Freeplay’s growth.

AND if that wasn’t enough, we’re also working with some other events between now and August to tide you over until we kick off.
