2011 Awards: Rules

The following rules are the conditions for participating in Freeplay Independent Game Festival Awards 2011. By entering and participating, entrants accept these conditions.

  1. Eligibility
    1. This competition is a game of skill and chance plays no part in determining the winners.
    2. Freeplay Independent Games Festival Awards (Freeplay) reserves the right in its sole discretion to decide whether an entry may compete or not. Freeplay’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
    3. The judges must be confident that submissions are created in the “indie spirit” by an independent developer, writer or artist.
    4. The submission may not be older than one year, i.e. it must have been completed, or have been worked on after 21st August 2010.
    5. Entries that make use of pre-existing technology (libraries, game engines etc) must state this in their application. The judges will take the amount of self-produced content into consideration when judging submissions.
  2. Submission and schedule
    1. Entries must complete the online submission form located here and supply supporting material via website, email, or post.
    2. Entries, including the online form, must arrive no later than 11:59 on 25th July 2011
    3. Shortlisted projects will be notified on or before 8th August 2011-06-23
    4. The awards will be announced during an event at the Freeplay Independent Games Festival on 21st August 2011
  3. Participants
    1. The awards are open to individuals and teams.
    2. Participating teams may add or remove participants during the course of the competition.
  4. Technology
    1. Game submissions must be able to run on a standard, currently available PC or smartphone. Browser games must work in Firefox or Chrome.
  5. Rights
    1. Before submitting an Entered Game, the Entrant must have obtained the written permission of all persons or entities having any rights in the Entered Game.
    2. A competing team owns all the rights to its entry and Freeplay will not distribute the final game without the team’s consent.
    3. Freeplay reserves the right to use screenshots of submitted works in their publicity, with the team’s consent.
    4. To submit an entry, the entrant must be authorised by all people involved in the entry’s creation.
    5. Entries that make use of pre-existing technology (libraries, game engines etc) must have all the necessary rights to use that technology in a non-commercial setting i.e. respect copyrights and any applicable licence agreements.
  6. Costs
    1. Submission is free of charge.
    2. Exhibition space for finalists is free of charge.
  7. Exhibition space
    1. To be eligible for exhibition space, entrants must submit an “Exhibition Application Form” and sign an exhibitor contract in a form as provided by Freeplay.
    2. Exhibitors are solely responsible for their exhibition space and its contents.  As outlined in the exhibition contract, exhibitors must arrange staffing for their exhibition space for the duration of the festival.
    3. Additional exhibition opportunities may become available for finalists & winners after the State Library Program on August 20th & 21st. Freeplay will contact eligible projects and discuss agreements and exhibition rights.
  8. Judging
    1. The panel of judges will consist of judges as selected by Freeplay.
    2. The judges will select the best three entrants in each category as the ‘award nominees’,
    3. Judging Categories are:
      1. Best Game
      2. Best International Game
      3. Best Design in a Game
      4. Best On-Paper Design
      5. Best Art in a Game
      6. Best Concept Art
      7. Best Technical Innovation
      8. Best Game Writing
      9. Best Audio
    4. Games may be entered in any category for which Entrants feel they are eligible.
    5. The judges will judge the entries of each of the award nominees and will select the best entrant in each category as the winner based on originality, creativity, and artistic vision.
    6. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
    7. The winner in each category will each win a Freeplay 2011 Independent Games Festival Awards Trophy.
    8. Award nominees and winners are selected by the competition’s panel of judges, and its decision cannot be appealed.
